Ed Sheeran, an English singer-songwriter, has a song called Eyes Closed. It was the lead single off his fifth studio album, −, and it was released on March 24, 2023 by Atlantic Records and Asylum. Max Martin, Shellback, Fred Again, and Aaron Dessner produced the song, which Sheeran co-wrote with the first three producers. When Eyes Closed first released, it topped the UK Singles Chart.
Sheeran and pop producer Max Martin began working together on Eyes Closed in 2018. It was originally a love song, but Sheeran and Dessner changed it in 2022 with new instrumentation and lyrics that talked about losing a close friend. On March 1, 2023, Sheeran revealed the song and the album, offering a number of pre-order options. He performed snippets of the song on an acoustic guitar and a piano in a social media post he posted on March 9. It was disclosed that it will be the album’s lead single in a TikTok that was uploaded that same day.
The song honours Jamal Edwards, a close friend and former music entrepreneur who passed away in February 2022 from a heroin overdose. While having dinner with Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, he had been texting Edwards about a future music video. The following day, he found out that his best friend had passed away. Sheeran said, “Blue was Jamal’s colour, but now is all I feel,” in reference to the tragedy. And I’m dancing with my eyes closed to try to get through it because, I guess, music helps heal.” Sheeran recalls the day he turned dirt on his friend’s grave since Edwards’ funeral was the first he had ever attended when the deceased was not cremated.
The Independent’s Roisin O’Connor gave Eyes Closed a four-star rating, noting that Sheeran’s performance carried “much of the emotional heft” of the song. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian gave the song three stars out of five in a mixed assessment, noting that listeners could “simply marvel at its effectiveness without being moved” or “loathe it with every fibre of your being” or “you already know if you’ll love it or loathe it.”
