The English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has a song called Curtains. It was made available on May 5, 2023, by Atlantic Records and Asylum. It is the eighth song on his fifth studio album, − (“Subtract”). Together with producer Aaron Dessner, Sheeran wrote the song. On March 1, 2023, Sheeran revealed the song and the album, offering a number of pre-order options.
Lyrically, Curtains is about working hard to achieve mental serenity. Sheeran conveys a sense of mortality and uncertainty while overcoming adversity. The song, which is about overcoming grief, also has electric guitar. It is based on an Aaron Dessner-created minor chord pattern that sounds like grunge in the vein of Avril Lavigne.
The song “has a springier rhythm, plus rock guitars that recall The Cranberries and a genuinely anthemic chorus, sounds like a future single,” according to Nick Levine of NME. As Rolling Stone’s Maura Johnston put it, it “turns a game of hide and seek into a metaphor for dragging oneself out of life’s muck”.
On May 5, 2023, the day the album was released, the official music video for Curtains debuted alongside the videos for every other song on the album as part of its visual album. The film, which is set in a woodland, shows Sheeran discovering some people rushing around him. The mists in the video vary from orange, where Ed is happy and having fun with them, and blue, when Sheeran is lost and seeks to avoid people. A short clip of Sheeran in the blue mist appears to be pleased too, as the video concludes with the mist dispersing and Sheeran and everyone else leaving.
