With considerable lyrical modifications, American singer Beyonce recorded a cover of Jolene which she featured in her eighth studio album Cowboy Carter, which was released on March 29, 2024. In an interview with Knox News on March 11, 2024, Dolly Parton disclosed that Beyoncé requested to record a rendition of the song. Parton wrote that she had “just heard ‘Jolene'” and liked the cover after the song was released. That girl deserves the trouble Beyoncé is bringing her.
The song’s sound and lyrics have been altered for the cover. All songwriting credit, however, went to Parton. The bridge features extra melodies and a choir of voices supporting the singer in Beyoncé’s rendition. While the chorus of both songs is the same, Lauren Boisvert of American Songwriter noted that Beyoncé’s cover “employs a smoother guitar sound backed by a pulsing beat to tie the song into her pop/R&B roots” while Parton’s version is “twangy on the guitar.”
The cover became the rendition of Jolene with the highest position on the chart when it debuted at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It simultaneously charted alongside Texas Hold ‘Em and II Most Wanted, earning Beyonce her 24th top-ten on the Hot 100 and Cowboy Carter her third top-ten. Along with ranking in the top three on the Hot Country Songs, Jolene came in third, becoming Beyoncé the first female artist to do so.
After one week of sales, the cover attained its highest place on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, peaking at number 24. This was the song’s highest position overall. On April 5, 2024, Jolene made its debut at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. It was one of three Cowboy Carter tracks to reach the top ten that week.
