On February 15, 2024, it was made available as a single pack on streaming sites. It is the third single off of the superduo’s joint album Vultures 1. A “a cappella” version and a Hooligan Version with just the choir are also included in the box. The digital single cover features a still image from a brief album marketing clip directed by Jon Rafman, which was eventually made available in full as the song’s music video.
Shortly before its official release, the tune was previewed at listening events in Chicago and New York, where it was produced by the superduo in collaboration with The Legendary Traxster, TheLabCook, Ojivolta, and Digital Nas. The original song featured a live performance sample of “Iron Man,” but West replaced it with a sample of Hell of a Life that included a legally approved interpolation of Iron Man after Ozzy Osbourne refused to provide his consent.
After being released, Carnival drew criticism due to West’s reference to Taylor Swift and his comparisons to other controversial public personalities, including R. Kelly, Bill Cosby, Puff Daddy, and others. Despite this, it was praised as one of the greatest tracks on Vultures 1, and its production and the performances of its partners received recognition.
Featured on Katy Perry’s E.T. in 2011, Carnival shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, marking West’s first chart-topper in 13 years. It also became his first number one since 2007’s Stronger as a lead artist. In addition, it became Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti’s first number-one hit and Ty Dolla Sign’s second after appearing on Post Malone’s Psycho in 2018. Carnival peaked at number one in Greece, Iceland, Latvia, and the Netherlands in addition to the US. It also made the top 10 in 14 other countries and the Billboard Global 200.
