Written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, If I Were a Boy was first performed by Jean in 2008. The same year, Beyonce, an American singer, released a version of the song off her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, which brought her widespread recognition. Beyoncé, Jean, and Gad handled the production as well. The song was first recorded by Jean, who was inspired by the painful breakup of a romantic relationship, but the record company rejected it. Next, Beyoncé recorded a rendition of her own. Beyoncé’s decision to release it as a single angered Jean at first, but they soon came to an understanding.
On October 8, 2008, Columbia Records released If I Were a Boy as the lead single and Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) as a double A-side single to US radio. The pop and R&B ballad If I Were a Boy is an introspective song that features acoustic guitars, drums, and strings, all of which have folk rock influences. The lyrics of the song criticise the male aspect of partnerships and bemoan gender stereotypes. Critics gave the song positive reviews, praising Beyoncé’s emotional and tortured vocal performance and describing it as her best song to date. The song was a commercial hit, peaking at number 10 on a total of twenty-five singles charts.
It is Beyoncé’s best-selling single in the UK, where it peaked at number one on the charts in multiple countries, including Brazil, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK, but it only ranks third when streaming data is taken into account. If I Were a Boy achieved multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, and the US, as well as a diamond one in Brazil, and peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Jake Nava directed and shot the black-and-white music video for the song If I Were a Boy. It is conceptually similar to the Disney comedy picture Freaky Friday (1976), with a theme of role reversal. An altered version of the original clip was used for the ballad’s Spanish music video.
