American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift‘s song Shake It Off is the lead single from her fifth studio album, 1989. Along with producers Max Martin and Shellback, Swift wrote the music and the lyrics. The lyrics, which focus on Swift’s apathy to critics and their disparaging remarks, were prompted by the media’s criticism of her public persona. It’s an upbeat dance-pop song with a saxophone melody, a handclap-based bridge, and a repeating drum beat. August 19, 2014 saw the release of “Shake It Off” by Big Machine Records, promoting 1989 as Swift’s first pop album following her prior country-inspired releases.

Though some thought the song’s lyrics were lacklustre, music experts hailed the dance-pop production of the song as catchy. In hindsight, critics believe Shake It Off was a successful 1989 premiere that helped Swift transition from a country to a pop persona. The song was included in NME and Consequence’s decade-end lists for 2010. Shake It Off achieved multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK, and it peaked at the top of charts in Hungary, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, and Canada. The track achieved its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and was certified as a Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The Shake It Off music video, directed by Mark Romanek, features Swift as an awkward individual trying a number of different dancing movements without success. Due to its use of dances like twerking that are connected to people of colour, it sparked charges of cultural appropriation. Swift featured the song in the set lists for three of her world tours: the 1989 World Tour, the Reputation Stadium Tour, and the Eras Tour. She also performed the song live at music festivals and award shows. Shake It Off received recognition for being the People’s Choice Award’s Favourite Song as well as three Grammy Award nominations.

Swift rerecorded the song as “Shake It Off (Taylor’s Version)” for her 2023 re-recorded album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in response to the 2019 disagreement over ownership of her back catalogue.
