The song’s lyrics describe a young couple who use everyday experiences to write a song. Because it was well-liked by her peers, she added the song to the track list. On September 10, 2007, the song was released by Big Machine Records to US country radio. “Our Song” is a fast-paced country song with banjo and fiddles that was produced by Nathan Chapman.
Swift’s songwriting on “Our Song” was praised by music critics for its use of catchy hooks and conversational lyrics. It was listed as one of the top country songs by female performers since 2000 by Rolling Stone in 2019. With the track, Swift became the youngest person (17 at the time) to create and sing a Hot Country Songs number one, peaking atop the charts for six weeks. The Recording Industry Association of America certified “Our Song” four times platinum. It peaked at number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified platinum by Music Canada and peaked at number thirty on the Canadian Hot 100.
The music video for the song was directed by Trey Fanjoy and debuted on CMT on September 24, 2007. It was awarded Video of the Year at the 2008 CMT Music Awards. Swift featured the song in the set lists of both the Speak Now World Tour (2011–2012) and the Fearless Tour (2009–2010), performing it on television shows and at numerous festivals. On select dates of her Red Tour (2013–2014), Reputation Stadium Tour (2018), and Eras Tour (2023–2024), Swift performed the song live.
