American singer Gwen Stefani‘s song Early Winter is taken from her second solo studio album, The Sweet Escape. The song, which was co-written by Stefani and English pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, was published in Europe on January 18, 2008, by Interscope Records as the album’s fifth and last single.
Early Winter is a synth-pop and soft rock ballad with new wave elements on the musical side. It was compared by critics to tracks by Rice-Oxley’s English alternative rock group, Keane. It was suggested that the song’s lyrics, which speak of a relationship that is about to end, were allusions to Stefani’s own marriage to Gavin Rossdale.
Music critics gave Early Winter largely excellent reviews when it was released, praising Stefani’s vocal performance and the song’s emotional appeal. In Europe, the song saw some degree of commercial success; it peaked at number six in Slovakia and Germany, number twelve in Switzerland, and number fourteen in Finland.
The accompanying music video for Early Winter was shot in Prague, Milan, and Budapest under the direction of Sophie Muller. Scenes of Stefani at train stations and in different costumes in a hall reminiscent of a palace are included. The Sweet Escape Tour included the song in its repertoire, and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey of the United States performed a special coda portion during the shows.
