The song Type Shit features American rappers Future, Travis Scott, and Playboi Carti in addition to American record producer Metro Boomin. As the lead single from Future and Metro’s collaboration studio album, We Don’t Trust You, it was delivered to Italian radio airplay through Freebandz (under the corporate name Wilburn Holding Co.), Boominati Worldwide, Epic Records, and Republic Records on March 22, 2024. The four musicians wrote the song with additional producer D. Rich, and Metro produced it alone.
On January 3, 2024, Metro Boomin posted a picture of himself mixing the music on Twitter, teasing the tune for the first time. Later on March 13, Carti shared a sneak peek of the song on his Instagram story, tagging Travis, Future, and Metro. Metro quickly verified this by tweeting the title of the song along with the album’s hashtag. The song was played in its entirety by Future, Metro, Travis, and Carti during their headline performance at the Rolling Loud music event in California later that week on March 18.
Type Shit was chosen as the fourth best song on We Don’t Trust You by Michael Saponara of Billboard. Although Future sets the tone for the song, Travis “invades the scene and makes it his own blockbuster,” according to Saponara. He says Travis “awakens all five senses” and attributes the change in the track’s style to his “smokey” voice.
The song is “awkward,” according to Robin Murray, who wrote for Clash, characterising it as “less of a song and more of a chant over a beat.” The song is described as a “true assembly of modern rap’s Avengers” by Scott Glasher of HipHopDX. According to Glasher, the “dystopian distorted vocals” by Travis and Carti on the “harrowing beat” sound like “Mediaeval church bells drenched with thundering 808s.”
Type Shit bowed at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 upon the release of We Don’t Trust You, with Like That topping the list.
