The song Fortnight is a collaboration between American rapper Post Malone and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Together with Jack Antonoff, who produced it alongside Swift, the two musicians composed the song. The song was made available by Republic Records on April 19, 2024, as the lead single from Swift’s eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department.
Swift revealed Fortnight as the first track on the tracklist shortly after revealing The Tortured Poets Department during her Grammy address on February 5. Malone ended up being one of the album’s two guest stars. He shared his joy about the release and the cooperation on Instagram the next day. Swift was praised by the artist, who called her “amazing” and “talented” in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1. He said that Swift merely “hit him up” to start the partnership. They had a “good day” together after he “rolled in the studio” and hung out with her. Malone admitted during the interview that he hadn’t heard the entire song yet.
Fortnight is a downtempo electropop song with influences from the 1980s. The song’s lyrics describe how a lady moves in next door to an ex-boyfriend who is now a married woman (“Your wife waters the flowers/ I want to kill her”).
Rodrigo Prieto handled the cinematography for Swift’s Fortnight music video, which she also wrote and produced. Swift teased the song video on social media four hours before the album’s release. It showed the two artists “typing furiously away at a dystopic, snow-white office, before cutting to a clip of Swift strapped onto a strange contraption.” A brief clip of Malone and Swift cuddling in the middle of a motorway, with Swift covered in a black dress and encircled by burning bits of paper, is also intercut.
