The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift‘s song thanK you aIMee is featured on The Anthology, the double album version of her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department (2024). Swift and Aaron Dessner wrote and produced the song, with Jack Antonoff serving as an additional producer. The lyrics of the song, which talk about dealing with a school bully, were widely seen by media sources as a reference to Swift’s conflict with American media celebrity Kim Kardashian.
On April 19, 2024, Swift released the standard edition of The Tortured Poets Department, which included sixteen tracks and four separate vinyl variant releases of the seventeenth extra track. Swift unexpectedly dropped fifteen more tracks as part of a double CD called The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology two hours after the first release.
Swift and American rapper Kanye West have been embroiled in a public rivalry for a long time. It all started when West entered the stage during Swift’s 2009 MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech for Best Female Video. West released the track “Famous” in 2016. Swift believed that West had unfairly claimed credit for her success and that the song’s lyrics were sexist. A few months later, West’s spouse, the well-known media figure Kim Kardashian, shared snippets of a video that appeared to be an edited conversation between West and Swift, in which Swift seemed to endorse the offensive line.
Later, in 2020, the entire video emerged, revealing that Swift had finally grown disapproving of parts of West’s lyrics. A portion of Swift’s sixth studio album, Reputation, was inspired by the controversy. During her 2023 Time Person of the Year interview, Swift described Kardashian’s actions as “a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar.”
The way “thank you Aimee” is styled as thanK you aIMee with the capitalised letters spelling out KIM, led fans and music journalists to surmise that Swift’s conflict with Kardashian was the theme of the song.
