One of Van Halen’s original songs, Jump, appears in Mattress, the twelfth episode of Glee Season One. The song is performed by the New Directions, with individual vocals by Artie, Finn, Mercedes, and Rachel which aired on December 2, 2009.
They sing the song as they record a commercial for Mattress Land, the store Rachel casts them in. It shows the Glee kids singing, rolling, and flipping in addition to jumping on several mattresses.
Sue subsequently sees the commercial and tells Figgins about it, which causes a major setback for New Directions on their way to Sectionals. Since the youngsters received payment in mattresses, they shouldn’t be permitted to compete since they have forfeited their amateur status. No glee club may participate if they have received payment for their activities. All of the mattresses are returned, with the exception of the one that Mr. Schue slept on due to his separation from Terri. The children are still permitted to compete, but they must do it without Mr. Schue because he accepted the “payment” for filming the commercial by lying on one of the beds. In his place, Emma led them to sectionals.
