It was made available as the lead track off of will.i.am’s Songs About Girls, her third solo album. It is essentially about women inheriting their sexual appeal from their mother’s genes. “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” by Bob James and “Don Quichotte” by Magazine 60 are sampled in the song; “I Got It from My Mama” credits Jean-Luc Drion and Dominique Régiacorte as co-writers.
On MTV Asia’s compilation of the Top 100 Hits of 2007, this song ranked #64. A remix of I Got It from My Mama with a sample from Daft Punk’s Around the World” was later released by will.i.am. Even it was denied access to the sample by Daft Punk. Still, the sample was used in a music video that starred the Paradiso Girls. The video uses the opening sequence from every Daft Punk Human After All video.
I Got It from My Mama began its chart career at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. The following week, the song rose 36 spots to number 57, and it ultimately peaked at number 31 in Canada.
