Heartbreaker is the second single off of American rapper will.i.am‘s third album, Songs About Girls. Cheryl Cole contributes a guest voice to the British single version, this version was also included on Cole’s first solo album, 3 Words, which was released in October 2009.
The music video for Heartbreaker and Cheryl Cole’s vocals were inspired by the late 2007 filming of The Passions of Girls Aloud, an ITV2 television series. Cole gained street dancing skills from the event and went on to try out for the will.i.am music video. In addition to singing a new section of the chorus and taking the place of the original, unidentified female vocalist in the breakdown, she was given the part. will.i.am claimed that Cole was recommended by the record label, and after meeting her, he thought the concept was ideal. On April 24, 2008, the pair performed the song uncut on The Graham Norton Show. Will.i.am, during a promotional visit on GMTV, declared Cheryl to be “hotter than Nelly Furtado.”
The song’s album version peaked at number 49 the next week after debuting at number 74 in the UK Singles Chart based only on downloads. Two weeks later, the song was in the top twenty-two. The week of its physical release, Heartbreaker peaked at number four, having spent the previous two weeks at number eight. With over 400,000 copies sold, the song was certified gold by the BPI and ranked as the 31st best-selling single of 2008. “Heartbreaker” also made its debut on the Irish Singles Chart at number 49. After two weeks at number 10, it peaked at number seven. Since launching his solo career, this is the musician’s first successful track.
Two versions of the music were uploaded by ECD:UK, however it only took one video alteration to make it to the top. In addition, it’s Cole’s twentieth straight top ten song in the UK and her 21st overall—both as a solo artist and with Girls Aloud. Cole made his breakthrough in continental Europe with Heartbreaker.
