American singer-actor Jack Black sings the song Peaches from the Nintendo/Illumination movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie, in which he plays Bowser. On April 7, 2023, the song was made available as a single. The Super Mario Bros. Movie character Bowser, played by Jack Black, sings a piano ballad about how much he loves Princess Peach.
A number of critics deemed the song to be the film’s high point. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman gave Black’s portrayal of Bowser high marks, particularly for Peaches. He contrasted the song with Meat Loaf’s tracks from Bat Out of Hell, and he also made comparisons between Tom Jones and Meat Loaf and Black. “It’s an innocent, silly ballad…with flashy colours and plenty of fun to (they hope) entice viewers to go see The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Plugged In’s Kristin Smith said in her admiration of the live-action music video.
The song is eligible to win the Best Original Song Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards on April 10, 2023. On December 21, 2023, the song was not selected for the shortlist, nonetheless. The song was nominated in December 2023 for the 81st Golden Globe Awards’ Best Original Song category. After debuting at number 83, the song has now reached number 56 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Black’s first solo single to chart. In Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the UK, the song also peaked at number forty.
