Yasmin, a singer-songwriter, released her first official single titled On My Own. On January 30, 2011, the song became available for digital download. She performed live at The Biz Sessions at The Sun in an acoustic setting. She sang three songs: “On My Own,” “Finish Line,” and a rendition of “Starry Eyed” by Ellie Goulding.
In the UK Singles Chart, On My Own peaked at number 39 at the end of the week after selling 8,162 copies, despite being at number 24 at midweek on February 1, 2011. Yasmin gave We Are SME an interview in which she expressed her happiness at the single’s UK chart high.
Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave “On My Own” a score of four (out of five) stars, saying that the song’s breakdown was something “Neneh Cherry wouldn’t sniff at” and that the lyrics were refreshing. Yasmin’s voice, the production of Shy FX, and the track’s lyrical concept were all lauded by About.com DJ Ron Slomowicz. Slomowicz called the song “spunky” and said, “Don’t be surprised if this one finds its way onto a variety of floors this winter.” He also predicted that it will be Ministry of Sound’s first smash of 2011. Paul Lester of The Guardian thought that Shy FX’s arrangement on the song had “hit single written all over it” and called it “tastefully lavish”.
