It was composed especially for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and it played during the end credits. After Katie, Jackson’s daughter, recommended Sheeran, Peter Jackson, the director of The Hobbit, asked Sheeran to compose a song for the film. In a single day, Sheeran saw the movie, composed the song, and recorded the majority of the tune.

On November 5, 2013, the song became available for digital download. The same day, the music video was made available. In its sixth week, it became Sheeran’s first number-one hit in New Zealand, having debuted at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart. For Best Original Song, “I See Fire” received a nomination for a Satellite Award.
