If This Was A Movie is the sixteenth song from Taylor Swift‘s third studio album, Speak Now, a deluxe version that Big Machine Records published on October 25, 2010. The song was actually published earlier on March 17, 2023, and was a part of an EP called The More Fearless (Taylor’s Version) Chapter, rather than appearing on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). As the sole co-written song (Martin Johnson was the other writer), the song most likely didn’t make the CD.
The narrative centers on a breakup that occurred six months prior, leaving the narrator stuck in a state of wishful pining. Throughout the lyrics, Swift utilizes classic movie tropes—such as a lover standing in the rain or showing up unannounced at a front door—to highlight exactly what is missing from her actual life. The bridge suggests a sense of mutual regret, as the narrator admits to “locking him out” and offers immediate forgiveness if he would only return and apologize. Ultimately, the song serves as a critique of how fiction sets unrealistic expectations for closure, ending without the very reunion the narrator is begging for.
Swift revealed that the re-recording of If This Was A Movie would be available at midnight on March 16, 2023, in honour of the start of The Eras Tour. The night of the recording, the previously unheard song “All of the Girls You Loved Before” and the rerecordings of “Eyes Open” and “Safe & Sound” were released.
Upon its digital release as a promotional single in November 2011, the song debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was a significant achievement because it made the track the fourth top-ten hit from the Speak Now era. This debut also helped Swift extend her record at the time for the most top-ten debuts by any artist in the chart’s history.
The song’s high Hot 100 position was primarily driven by strong digital sales. It entered the Digital Song Sales chart at number 3, with roughly 163,000 downloads in its first week. Additionally, it found success on genre-specific charts, peaking at number 1 on the Country Digital Song Sales chart.
