American rapper Jay-Z, who is featured on the song, co-wrote it with producers Tricky Stewart and Kuk Harrell. The-Dream also contributed to the song’s composition.
Umbrella achieved international acclaim, ascending to the top of the charts in 17 nations, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, and Switzerland. In the UK throughout the 2000s, the song was one of the most played on radio stations, and its chart performance corresponded with the extended rain and flooding. It is one of the few songs to lead the chart for at least 10 weeks and had the longest run at number one for any single of that decade, having topped the UK Singles Chart for 10 weeks in a row. It held the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in a row, making it one of the biggest digital debuts in the country at the time.
The accompanying music video for the song, which was directed by Chris Applebaum and featured Rihanna’s naked body covered in silver paint, won her two accolades: Most Watched Video on MuchMusic and Video of the Year at the 2007 MuchMusic Video Awards.
