American rock group Paramore‘s Misery Business is the lead single off their 2007 second studio album Riot!. The lead singer of the group, Hayley Williams, wrote the song to “finally explain my side of the story and feel freed of it all” after she had a previous experience with a male friend she believed was being taken advantage of by a girl. Williams and her friend went on a date after the incident. The band’s “Misery Business” music video was the third one that Shane Drake had directed, and in 2007 Alternative Press awarded it the Video of the Year.
The song tells the story of a long-standing rivalry between two girls over a boy, ultimately ending in the narrator’s victory. Williams based the lyrics on a real-life situation from her early teens, capturing the raw, vindictive energy of a young person finally getting “revenge” by winning over their crush after months of watching him with someone else.
Critics initially hailed the track for its infectious hooks and for proving that a female-fronted band could dominate a genre largely controlled by men. It received massive radio play and cemented Paramore’s status as superstars. Over the years, however, the song became a centerpiece for discussions on “internalized misogyny” due to its aggressive stance toward the other woman and the use of a specific slur in the second verse.
This cultural shift led Hayley Williams to publicly distance herself from the song’s message. In 2018, the band made the surprising decision to retire it from their live sets, with Williams explaining that she had outgrown the “narrow-minded” perspective she held at seventeen. Despite this hiatus, the song’s influence never truly faded; its impact on modern pop is so significant that artists like Olivia Rodrigo have even given Williams and former guitarist Josh Farro songwriting credits on tracks like “Good 4 U” due to the obvious stylistic similarities.
Regarded as the group’s breakout single, Misery Business is acknowledged for presenting the group to a general public. The song was commercially successful and peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 (during the week of January 12, 2008). Up until “Ain’t It Fun” peaked at No. 10 in 2014, it was the band’s highest-charting single. According to the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, it likewise reached at No. 3. In less than a year after the song’s release, the group’s first charting single in the UK was produced in excess of 20,000 copies.
It was also successful in many other nations, such as Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Mexico. The song became the band’s first to sell six million copies when it was certified six times platinum in the US on June 2, 2022.
