SexyBack is a song from Justin Timberlake‘s second studio album, FutureSex/LoveSounds. Jive Records released it to US mainstream and rhythmic radio stations on July 18, 2006, as the album’s lead single. Danja, Timbaland, and Timberlake collaborated to write and produce the song. Timberlake spoke “SexyBack” and said that he went “left” by performing the song in a rock style rather than an R&B approach. He referred to the song as David Bowie and David Byrne “covering” James Brown’s 1970 song Sex Machine. The tune features Timbaland (who is credited on the album but not on the single), and Timberlake’s voice is distorted. The song’s instrumentation has a pounding bass beat, computerised chords, and drum machine noises.
The central theme of the track is a bold reclamation of confidence and sexual charisma. By claiming he is “bringing sexy back,” Timberlake was essentially declaring a return to a more provocative and high-energy style of music and performance that he felt had vanished from the mainstream. The lyrics are set against the backdrop of an intense club environment, focusing on the magnetism of physical attraction and the heat of the dance floor.
SexyBack was Timberlake’s first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending seven weeks at the top. It also topped numerous Billboard magazine charts, including the Mainstream Top 40, Hot Dance Airplay, and Hot Digital Songs, and debuted in the top ten on the majority of singles charts. Internationally, it became Timberlake’s first number-one hit in the United Kingdom. In Australia, the song was Timberlake’s second number-one single, spending two weeks on top. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified SexyBack three times platinum, as did the Canadian Recording Industry Association.
The song received the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2007. At the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, Timberlake won the People’s Choice Award for Favourite R&B Song as well as Male Artist of the Year. The music video was filmed in June 2006, Timberlake chose to collaborate with filmmaker Michael Haussman based on the latter’s work on Madonna’s 1994 music video Take a Bow.
