Justin Timberlake, an American singer-songwriter, has a song called Selfish. It is his first solo single release in nearly six years, coming out on January 25, 2024, after the July 2018 song SoulMate. The lead track off his upcoming sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, is this one.
Not releasing any solo tracks between 2020 and 2023, Timberlake only featured on Timbaland’s Keep Going Up with Nelly Furtado, “Sin Fin” with Romeo Santos, and “Stay with Me” as a duet. He and NSYNC reunited in September 2023 to record the promotional single “Better Place” for the DreamWorks Animation feature Trolls Band Together, which he also co-produced.
Timberlake made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 25, 2024. Selfish was released, and he disclosed that the parent album Everything I Thought It Was took four years to make.
Timberlake, Amy Allen, Henry Walter, Theron Thomas, and Louis Bell wrote the song. Bell, Cirkut, and Timberlake produced the song. The official music video was released on January 25, 2024, directed by Bradley Calder.
The singer revealed in an Apple Music 1 interview that Adam Blackstone’s rendition of Donny Hathaway’s Jealous Guy served as the inspiration for the song’s first lyrical inspiration. Timberlake remarked throughout the process that males typically don’t sing about “an emotion that makes them vulnerable”
Selfish marked Timberlake’s highest chart debut in six years when it debuted at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was his 39th solo Hot 100 entry overall and his 29th to make it into the top 40. The song made its debut on the Canadian Hot 100 at position 22.
On January 26, 2024, Selfish made its chart debut in the UK at number 47 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart and number 51 on the Singles Sales Chart.
