Joel, Wayne Hector, Arthur Bacon, and Freddy Wexler (who also produced the song) wrote the song. His first entry on the list since his 1997 rendition of “Hey Girl” came in at number 11 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Joel played the song live for the first time since 2002 at the 66th Grammy Awards.
After being released at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday, February 1, by Columbia Records, “Turn the Lights Back On” makes its way into the Hot 100 during its first full week of tracking (February 2–8). Encouraged even further by Joel’s piano ballad performance at the Grammy Awards on February 4, it debuted with 5.1 million radio listeners, 4.5 million official streams, and 22,000 physical (7″ vinyl) and digital singles sold in the United States, according to Luminate. On the Digital Song Sales chart, it concurrently jumps 11–5.
As a recording artist, Joel has penned 40 of his 43 Hot 100 singles (including his first 37), with his first charting co-write being “Turn the Lights Back On.” Joel also made it to the top in 1992 with his rendition of Elvis Presley’s “All Shook Up,” which was written by Presley and Otis Blackwell. Dylan also wrote “To Make You Feel My Love.”
Billy Joel – Turn the Lights Back On Lyrics
Please open the door
Nothing is different
We’ve been here before
Pacing these halls
Trying to talk
Over the silence
And pride sticks out its tongue
Laughs at the portrait that we’ve become
Stuck in a frame
Unable to change
I was wrong
I’m late
But I’m here right now
Though I used to be romantic
I forgot somehow
Time can make you blind
But I see you now
As we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on
Here
Stuck on a hill
Outsiders inside the home that we built
The cold settles in
It’s been a long winter of indifference
Maybe you love me
Maybe you don’t
Maybe you’ll learn to
And maybe you won’t
You’ve had enough
But I won’t give up on you
I’m late
But I’m here right now
And I’m tryin’ to find the magic
That we lost somehow
Maybe I was blind
But I see you now
As we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on
I’m late but I’m here right now
Is there still time for forgiveness
Won’t you tell me how
I can’t read your mind
But I see you now
As we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on
