Blue Magic is the lead song off of Jay-Z‘s American Gangster, his eleventh studio album. On September 20, 2007, the song was made available as a single. Pharrell performs a rendition of the R&B girl group En Vogue’s song “Hold On” in the chorus. En Vogue is also featured in the song. Blue Magic alludes to a strong variety of heroin that Frank Lucas marketed during the height of his drug trade in Harlem, New York. Trey Songz and Pharrell are featured on an official remix.
The song My Melody by Eric B. & Rakim is mentioned in the first stanza. The song itself makes references to the 1980s for the most part. Jay-Z discusses his early years as a drug dealer and his connections to the Iran-Contra crisis, as well as the CIA and Contras’ cocaine trafficking in the US during the Reagan Presidency during the 1980s. Frankenstein, a horror movie from 1931, is also sampled in Blue Magic.
June Ambrose designed the outfits for the music video for Blue Magic, which was directed by Hype Williams. On October 11, 2007, it made its debut on BET’s 106 & Park. Teyana Taylor, a recording artist and dancer, may be seen dancing and popping throughout the film. On December 31, 2007, the video debuted at the bottom of BET’s Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2007. At a period when the U.S. dollar had dramatically declined in value relative to the majority of major foreign currencies, including the euro, pound sterling, and Canadian dollar, the movie, which prominently featured wads and a bag full of 500 Euro notes, was noteworthy for drawing media attention to the euro.
