American rapper Jay-Z released Young Forever as the fifth single from his 2009 album The Blueprint 3 on the Roc Nation label at the beginning of 2010. Kanye West produced the song. It is a reworking of Alphaville’s 1984 song Forever Young in which Jay-Z raps during the subsequent verses in place of the further verses, the original melody is kept, and British vocalist Mr. Hudson performs the original lyrics (mostly during the first verse and the chorus).
In the UK, it was made available as the third official single (D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) was never made available there). The song’s original release date in that nation was set for January 25, 2010, the same day as Mr. Hudson’s second collaboration with N-Dubz, Playing with Fire. However, that date was changed.
Jay-Z has played the song multiple times with Beyoncé replacing Mr. Hudson, including as the headlining act at the 2010 Coachella festival. Beyoncé made an unexpected appearance on Jay-Z’s stage and sang the last song of the evening. The song was also sung by the duo at a concert held at the Las Vegas Cosmopolitan Hotel on New Year’s Eve in 2010. Additionally, the song was played as the encore for their combined On the Run and On the Run II stadium tours.
Young Forever debut on the Billboard Hot 100 after the album’s release was at number 75. The following week, strong digital downloads propelled the song to number 41. After being released as a single, the song peaked at number 10 and re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 97, earning Jay-Z his 17th top ten single. This achievement set a new record that he shared with Ludacris for the most Top 10 singles among rappers.
