The song The Pretender is by the rock group Foo Fighters from America. From the group’s 2007 album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, the song was choosen as the lead single. Only “Learn to Fly” and “Best of You” have surpassed its place in the US Billboard Hot 100, making this one of Foo Fighters’ most successful songs. It peaked at number 37, making it their third top-40 single.

Silver Heart was the working title when Dave Grohl first performed it during Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’s pre-production, but not much more was done on it. Producer Gil Norton stated, “The verse and the middle hadn’t been written, but the chorus was.” In addition, the tune moved much more slowly.” Silver Heart was written by Grohl during a 10-day break from recording in April 2007. After hearing the monitor mixes, he decided that the record needed one more upbeat song. The following day, the song would receive a real recording after the band completed a demo for The Pretender and Norton gave his approval.

Grohl characterised The Pretender as being “a stomping Foo Fighters uptempo song, with a little bit of Chuck Berry in it.” Written in the key of A minor, the song begins with a very stripped-down beginning that includes a small string part, a gentle guitar, and vocals. This highlights the shifting dynamics that Grohl wanted to use on Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. The sound of hard rock then intensifies, broken up by breakdowns and escalations in the bridge, which includes a reprise of the intro.
