On September 25, 2021, Dua Lipa stated in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, “It’s just been fun experimenting.” I will continue to create pop music, but it has an exciting new sound all its own that sounds like a movement from Future Nostalgia.” With a statement that “I’ve done a big chunk of writing: It’s starting to take shape; I’ve got a lot of it recorded,” she revealed that she has been working nonstop on her upcoming album. Dua stated in the same interview that it “has a vision.” “For the time being, it has a name,” implying that the record has a name.
On May 20, 2021, the president of Warner Records discussed Dua’s future professional endeavours with Variety. The upcoming record, according to him, will be “something completely different and at scale.” stating that “She was talking about album No.3 when we barely had No.2 done”.
Dua Lipa revealed the album’s title, cover, and track listing during a brief Instagram live on March 13, 2024. The event began with a glitch that displayed new phrases “Vertigo, chaos, havoc, mayhem, disruption, and hope” on her online store, dualipa dot com.
The music video for Illusion was recorded at Barcelona’s Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc, also known as the Montjuïc Municipal Pool. It was the site of the 1992 Summer Olympics’ diving and water polo competitions.
