Drake, a Canadian rapper, dropped his diss hit Push Ups on April 19, 2024. The song is a reaction to multiple tracks (namely Like That) from the joint albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You by Metro Boomin and Future. Push Ups takes aim at Ja Morant, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, Future, and the Weeknd.
On April 13, 2024, a demo version of Push Ups with an altered outro and samples from Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s Get Money surfaced online. Later that day, a different version that did not have the samples leaked but did have a prolonged sung outro and lyric modifications. Some fans conjectured that the tune wasn’t a real song, but rather the result of artificial intelligence because of the early demo’s poor audio technical quality. When the song was officially released on April 19, this was refuted.
After J. Cole’s 7 Minute Drill, which dropped from streaming sites a week after its April 5 release, Push Ups is the second single responding to Like That.
Push Ups, amid a high-profile rap beef, made a notable impact on music charts worldwide despite being a non-traditional single. In the U.K. Official Singles Chart, “Push Ups” entered the Top 20, peaking around number 14, and topped the U.K. Hip Hop & R&B Singles Chart, demonstrating strong genre-specific performance.
Although driven by heat from rap culture rather than traditional radio hits, “Push Ups” maintained a steady presence on streaming and singles charts for several weeks, reflecting Drake’s commercial pull even with a provocative release.
