The history of rock music is filled with tragic endings, but few songs carry the eerie, prophetic weight of Fiction by Avenged Sevenfold. Originally titled “Death,” the track stands as a final, unintentional testament to the creative genius of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. As the band’s founding drummer and a primary songwriter, Sullivan’s influence was the heartbeat of the group. However, it was this specific piano-driven ballad that would ultimately bridge the gap between his life and his afterlife, serving as a chilling farewell to his bandmates and his fans.

The circumstances surrounding the song’s creation are nothing short of supernatural. Sullivan submitted the completed demo for the track on December 24, 2009. In what would become a haunting piece of foreshadowing, he reportedly told his bandmates that he had given them everything he had and that this was the final song for the upcoming album. Three days later, he was found deceased in his home. The shock of his passing nearly ended the band, but they eventually decided to move forward with the album Nightmare, using Fiction as the emotional centerpiece of the record.

Musically, Fiction is a departure from the high-octane heavy metal that defined the band’s earlier work. It is a somber, theatrical piece built on a foundation of melancholic piano and swelling organ arrangements. Because Sullivan passed away before he could record professional studio vocals, the band made the artistic choice to preserve his “scratch vocals” from the original demo. This results in a dual-vocal performance where lead singer M. Shadows trades verses with the late drummer. The contrast between Shadows’ polished studio delivery and Sullivan’s raw, raspy demo recordings creates the sensation of a conversation occurring across different planes of existence.

The lyrical content of the song remains a subject of intense devotion and debate. With lines that speak of finding a place to rest and hoping friends find their way alone, the track feels like a conscious goodbye. While the official cause of Sullivan’s death was an accidental overdose exacerbated by an enlarged heart, the lyrics suggest a man who was deeply reflective of his own mortality. He adopted the nickname Fiction for himself, and by retitling the song in his honor, the band turned a dark premonition into a celebration of a life lived at full throttle.

Today, the song is treated with a level of reverence rarely seen in the metal community. During live performances, Avenged Sevenfold often utilizes a recording of Sullivan’s voice while leaving his drum throne empty and bathed in a single spotlight. This allows the audience to participate in a collective moment of mourning and celebration. Fiction is more than just a track on an album; it is a rare piece of musical history where the artist’s final words were captured in their most vulnerable state, ensuring that The Rev’s voice would never truly be silenced.
