Halsey’s I Never Loved You is a haunting pop song that explores heartbreak, emotional abandonment, and the painful reality of a relationship falling apart. Released on October 10, 2024, the track appears on her fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator. Through atmospheric production and vulnerable storytelling, I Never Loved You captures the conflicting emotions of loving someone who can no longer provide the support and connection a relationship needs to survive.
The song emerges from a concept album in which Halsey pays tribute to musical icons by channeling their sounds and aesthetics. For I Never Loved You, she drew inspiration from Kate Bush, even promoting the release by recreating Bush’s ethereal visual style, including wardrobe and symbolic imagery reminiscent of “Running Up That Hill.” However, while the surface pays homage, the lyrical content is deeply rooted in Halsey’s personal pain.
I Never Loved You stands out for its raw, metaphor-rich storytelling. The lyrics reflect on a failed relationship tested by physical illness and emotional trauma. Halsey likens love to a kind of medical emergency, as if trying to love someone “through an open wound.” The song narrates a catastrophic moment, possibly a car accident, that leaves the protagonist clinging to life in a hospital while her partner arrives too late and emotionally distant. The repeated question—“Who was driving the car?”—lingers like a haunting symbol of responsibility and blame. The song is thought to reflect Halsey’s struggle with autoimmune disorders and how they fractured her romantic connection.
Critics embraced the song with overwhelming positivity. Rolling Stone named it a “Best New Music” highlight, while Riff Magazine applauded its poetic lyricism. College publications like Ramapo News called it “confessional, painful, and beautiful,” drawing strong comparisons to Kate Bush in its use of eerie piano chords and delicate harmonies. Online forums and Reddit threads became filled with listener testimonials, many interpreting the track as Halsey’s reckoning with abandonment and vulnerability during her illness. Some fans reflected that the partner in the song seemed loving “until she got sick,” framing the relationship as conditional and unsteady.
Within The Great Impersonator, I Never Loved You marks a defining emotional peak. While the album itself is built around the idea of Halsey embodying other musical identities, this track breaks the illusion by revealing something raw and undeniably personal. It’s both a tribute and a catharsis. Critics from outlets like People and Vulture acknowledged that despite the concept of impersonation, moments like this song reveal Halsey’s truest self.
