American recording artist Nelly’s song Gone is off his sixth studio album, 5.0. The track is Nelly’s follow-up to his 2002 global number-one hit Dilemma, which also featured lead vocals by American recording artist Kelly Rowland. It was composed as a continuation of the love tale presented in Dilemma by Eric Goudy II, Nelly, and Earl Hood, and it was co-authored and produced by Rico Love and Jim Jonsin. Dilemma p.2 was the original title of Gone, but Nelly altered it and stopped referring to the song as Dilemma’s sequel out of concern that it wouldn’t live up to people’s expectations and because he wanted Gone to be acknowledged as a distinct production.
The song, which is primarily R&B-ballad with pop music elements, was submitted to American Urban/Urban AC radio stations on January 4, 2011. It is the third song from 5.0 and was sent to top 40/mainstream radios on January 19, 2011. Although some critics questioned the significance of the sequel duet and the song’s lack of unique R&B vibe, Gone was widely lauded for recycling the greatest parts of Dilemma and recapturing the same sentiments.
Gone was the third most added single to Top 40/Mainstream and Rhythmic stations on January 21, 2011, and the second most added single to Urban radio. Over the course of the two days following its release, the single has received 45 additional additions. It debuted at number 79 on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list on February 5, 2011, and it is now peaking at number fifty-nine. The song became a popular failure and only achieved moderate success on the R&B charts, failing to make the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Gone sold 113,258 units in South Korea.
