The Pussycat Dolls, an American girl group, recorded the song Buttons for their first studio album PCD. Nicole Scherzinger, Jason Perry, Sean Garrett, and Jamal Jones wrote the song. Ron Fair and the aforementioned two produced it. With synthesisers and a Middle Eastern beat, the pop and R&B song has hip hop influences. The group begs a reluctant man to assist them in undressing while taking on a submissive demeanour. A&M Records and Interscope Records released a remix version of the album’s fourth single on April 11, 2006, featuring American rapper Snoop Dogg.
Though Buttons appeared on Rolling Stone and Vibe’s 2006 year-end lists, contemporary music critics criticised the song’s production. Having been a commercial hit, the song peaked at number one in Austria, Hungary, and New Zealand, becoming the group’s fourth consecutive number one there. In addition, it reached the top ten in twelve more countries. It peaked at number three in the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The Pussycat Dolls became the first girl group in digital history to have three singles cross the two million digital copy mark when “Buttons” sold two million digital copies in the US. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the song platinum (RIAA).
Francis Lawrence, the director of the accompanying music video, pays tribute to the group’s burlesque roots with a number of dance sequences, culminating in a Bollywood-inspired routine. At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, it was nominated twice and finally won one for Best Dance Video. The group performed Buttons on a number of TV shows and award shows to further promote the song. These events included Fashion Rocks and the 2006 American Music Awards, where video from the group’s performances went viral in 2020 due to rumours of tension between Melody Thornton and Scherzinger on stage. The song was included in the Just Dance 2022 video game by Ubisoft.
