Teenagers is the eleventh song and the fourth and last single from My Chemical Romance‘s third studio album, The Black Parade. Although it was the fourth single to be released in the UK, the Philippines, Australia, and Canada, it was the third single to be released in the US. Radio play of the song began on May 15, 2007.
Teenagers debuted at #2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, peaked at #67, and had its “Hot Shot” debut the following week at #87 on the Hot 100. It peaked at #13 on Modern Rock Tracks and #23 on the Pop 100. It was the group’s fourth consecutive top 20 success from The Black Parade and their third top ten hit from the album, reaching at #9. It also debuted at #42 in the UK. It made its debut on the ARIA Singles Chart at position 16.
An almost shot-for-shot homage to Pink Floyd’s The Wall opening scene opens the music video for Teenagers. Cheerleaders who wear gas masks such to those worn by the teenage and young adult supporters in the movie bear further connections to The Wall. On May 30, 2007, the band uploaded the video to their YouTube channel. The video surpassed the Famous Last Words video to become the third most watched video on the website somewhere around November 1, 2007. The word “shit” was removed from this version of the video. The words “gun,” “shit,” and “murder” were removed from the MTV version, along with the scene of the kids breaking in. Total Request Live featured the video.
