Mario‘s third studio album, Go, was released on December 11, 2007. The song Crying Out for Me is an R&B track and the second official single. Written by Jasper Cameron and Amber Rives, it was produced by Polow da Don.
The song has been in the Billboard Hot 100 for fifteen weeks. Week 50/2007 was when it first appeared, and week 12/2008 was when it last appeared. It peaked at position 33, where it remained for a week. The position 97 was its highest entry. Both the official remix, which isn’t on the single or album Go, features rappers Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes.
Many reviewers focused on Mario’s vocal maturity, noting that his performance felt more “earthier” and “purposeful” than his previous work. Sophie Bruce of BBC Music went as far as to compare the underlying power of his voice to a young Luther Vandross, while other outlets like DJBooth characterized the song as Mario’s official “ticket into the world of the grown and sexy.” They felt the record solidified his ability to handle “man-sized” R&B themes rather than the lighter “teen idol” material of his debut.
R. Malcom Jones, Costume Designer, directed the Crying Out for Me music video. Created by June Ambrose, it made its debut on September 17, 2007, on BET’s Access Granted. The song includes some alternative versions in the video. Mario shows up somewhere at the start. He witnesses his female friend and her boyfriend fighting. Mario approaches her to say hello as her lover leaves. With jealousy, her boyfriend grabs her and puts his face in front of him. Hurt, the girl uses a pay phone to call Mario.
Next, they head to a club. When he comes to get her later, she walks out while glancing over her shoulder. Mario takes off after giving her a hug. When they discover that the girl’s boyfriend is following them, they are taken aback. He attempts to run them off the road but crashes and kills himself; this sequence of events is reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s What Goes Around…Comes Around music video. They discover he’s dead when they go outside to look around. With tears in her eyes, the girl turns to Mario, who consoles her.
