The rock group Linkin Park from America has a song called The Catalyst. It was released as the lead single off their fourth studio album, A Thousand Suns, on August 2, 2010. The album was released officially on September 8, 2010. On August 25, 2010, the band’s turntablist Joe Hahn released the music video for the song.
The Catalyst appears in the opening theme of Namco-Bandai’s arcade game Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. and the trailer and credits of the video game Medal of Honour. Additionally, a few commercials for the Discovery Channel series Surviving the Cut featured it. The video game Linkin Park Revenge for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch also included the song. Additionally, The Catalyst was featured in the trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s 2011 film The Lincoln Lawyer.
Linkin Park Track Pack is downloadable content for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock that includes The Catalyst and five additional tracks from A Thousand Suns. On October 19, 2010, the track pack was made available.
With 12.2 million audience impressions, The Catalyst landed at the top of the US Billboard Rock Songs chart upon launch. It was the first single to debut at number one in the 14-month history of the chart. With this, the band achieved their second No. 1 hit on the chart, sharing the record for most No. 1 singles with Alice in Chains and Three Days Grace. Additionally, it became the band’s fourteenth top five single on the chart when it debuted at No. 3 on the US Alternative Songs chart, trailing only Green Day in terms of most top fives.
It peaked at No. 1 in its third week of release, which made it the band’s tenth No. 1 overall and tied for second most among all artists. While the song did well on the Rock and Alternative hits charts, it peaked at No. 12 and was among the band’s lowest-charting hits on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Not only did it debut at No. 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it also sold 60,000 downloads in its first week of release, making it the band’s eighth top forty song overall.
