It was composed by Allen, Iyiola Babalola, and Darren Lewis, who sampled “Free Soul” by the Soul Brothers. In July 2006, the song was made available as the album’s lead single. To promote her work, Allen issued a limited edition of “LDN” and then announced the release of “Smile” after landing a record deal with Regal Recordings and becoming well-known on the social media platform Myspace with demo songs.

Rocksteady music is used in the song, and the lyrics discuss how she is coping with her boyfriend’s betrayal while taking pleasure in his suffering. The majority of modern critics praised the song, pointing out its sorrowful yet carnival-esque theme and the confidence it conceals. The record topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in a row, finished the year as the 11th most successful song in the country, and climbed inside the top 40 of the charts in several European and Australian countries. “Smile” was re-recorded in Simlish and aired on shows for promotional purposes. In the accompanying music video, Allen hired a posse to beat her ex-boyfriend, depicting a revenge theme. Sophie Muller directed it, and because of its offensive language, it was later removed from MTV. Although Allen claimed to be “sick” of it, the song was played live numerous times, including on chat programs, during her 2007 concert tour, and during her 2009 concert tour. At the London Broadcast Music Incorporated Awards in 2008, it took home a Pop Award.
