American alternative band Lifehouse released First Time as the lead single off their fourth studio album, Who We Are. Lead singer Jason Wade wrote the song with Jude Cole, who also produced it. Wade stated that he had to write the song immediately and that it required careful thought. First Time has an early-romantic premise and is a power pop song with elements of alternative rock. Geffen Records first made the song available as a digital download on May 7, 2007. On May 15, 2007, it was then requested for mainstream radio.
Critics who compared the song to Lifehouse’s Hanging by a Moment gave it high ratings. In the US and Canada, it peaked at number 26 and number 47, respectively, on the charts. Later, it reached number 31 in New Zealand. On June 29, 2007, the music video for the song debuted on The N and AOLmusic.com. It shows scenes of actual couples experiencing their first love. The song has been live-performed by Lifehouse on national late-night television programmes.
