Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi‘s song Wish You the Best was made available as the third single from his second studio album Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent on April 13, 2023. It was Capaldi’s fifth number one overall and the third single from the album to debut at the top of the UK Singles Chart. On April 21, 2023, the song made its début at the top of the UK Singles Chart, becoming Capaldi’s fifth consecutive number-one song overall. Sales of a CD single, of which 16,800 came from the format, helped it reach the top.
The narrative centers on the conflict between honesty and politeness. While the lyrics express a deep, lingering desire for the person to return, they also highlight the difficult choice to suppress those feelings. Capaldi describes the “lie” often told during post-breakup encounters, where one claims to be happy for the other person despite feeling completely heartbroken. On April 14, 2023, the official music video for Wish You The Best was made available. The plot revolves around Greyfriars Bobby, a terrier dog from 19th-century Scotland who spent 14 years visiting his owner’s grave following the owner’s passing. Winnie, a Cairn Terrier, played the dog, and Tom Lewis and veteran actor David Bradley played the owners. It took ten days of training to get Winnie to do a scene in which she was holding an envelope in her mouth.
Postman John Fry’s (Bradley) dog, Willow (Winnie), is the subject of the video. Willow waits in front of John’s grave after his death until Lewis, the new postman, notices her and takes her in. Willow assists the postman with deliveries, just like John does, but it’s evident that she misses John. As the video comes to a close, Willow passes away and the postman lays her collar on John’s tomb.
