Whine Up is the lead song off American singer Kat DeLuna‘s debut album, 9 Lives. Elephant Man is featured in the song. It was thought to be a feature by Puerto Rican rapper Ivy Queen, however DeLuna did the rapping alone. Latin Dance Club Play Track Of The Year was the Billboard Latin Music Award that DeLuna won for the song. The phrase “wind up” in Caribbean English (West Indian) refers to moving one’s hips on the dance floor.
On May 15, 2007, the song was played on American mainstream radio. On Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, the song debuted at number 24 and reached its high at number 29 on the Hot 100. On February 13, 2008, the song received a Gold certification after more than 500,000 legal downloads in the United States. In the French charts, Whine Up reached at number nine.
Gil Green directed the video for Whine Up, which had its debut on her MySpace page. DeLuna begins by singing Dulcissime, the opening to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, for her friend. Suddenly, the melody of her song comes on, and she proceeds to dance and perform the song. Her dance, The Whine Up, goes with the music. The video debuted on July 26, 2007, on MTV’s TRL. It spent 31 days on the countdown, peaking at #2. Future Dance Central choreographer Marcos Aguirre, who subsequently choreographed the same song for DLC’s sequel, is featured in the video.
