The track Streetlights is taken from American singer-songwriter and record producer Kanye West‘s fourth studio album, 808s & Heartbreak. Tony Williams and Esthero both contribute backing vocals to the song. Mr. Hudson co-produced it with producer West. Together with Williams and Esthero, the producers co-wrote the song. Driving past street lights served the inspiration for West’s song. Shoegaze synths are included in this pop piano ballad with elements of indie music. In his lyrics, West compares the passing of time and memories to street lights.
Music critics gave Streetlights largely favourable reviews, frequently complimenting the composition. While some reviews praised West’s voice, others emphasised the song’s emotional appeal. On June 29, 2009, the accompanying music video made its debut. In the video, West drives about trying to find a place that he never ends there. West had a live performance of the song in 2013 while on The Yeezus Tour. In his movie Jesus Is King, he sings an acoustic version of it with the Sunday Service Choir. Covers of the song have been recorded by Stars, Daniel Caesar, and Ruby Amanfu.
West posted the Streetlights music video on his blog on June 29, 2009. Javier Longobardo, a Spanish designer, was the director and creator. The computer-animated film shows West cruising through an abandoned city in an automobile, looking for a place he never ends at. The PlayStation console’s shapes are reminiscent of the polygon shapes used in the music video’s graphics. The video resembles “one of those pastel 80s beach-party T-shirts [having] come to computer-animated life,” according to Tom Breihan of Pitchfork.
