American singer Jennifer Lopez recorded the song On the Floor for her seventh studio album, Love? It was the lead single from the album and was released by Island Records on February 8, 2011, featuring American rapper Pitbull. Along with On the Floor producer RedOne, the song’s songwriters are Kinnda “Kee” Hamid, AJ Junior, Teddy Sky, Bilal “The Chef” Hajji, Pitbull, Gonzalo Hermosa, and Ulises Hermosa. It is a pop song with a common time speed of 130 beats per minute that combines house, techno, Latin, and dance-pop music. Ven a Bailar (English: “Come to Dance”) is the Spanish translation of the song that Lopez recorded. Jimena Romero and Julio Reyes Copello contributed extra lyrics to it.
Lopez’s Latin upbringing served as inspiration for the song’s composition, which honours her dance roots. Recurrent portions from the 1982 Bolivian song “Llorando se fue,” penned by Gonzalo and Ulises Hermosa of Los Kjarkas, are interpolated into the song. This piece acquired prominence when Kaoma covered it for their 1989 single Lambada.
Lopez defined On the Floor as a very contemporary song that evolved from her signature style. Along with a number of other product endorsement agreements, Lopez’s appointment as a judge on the tenth season of American Idol coincided with the premiere and distribution of On the Floor. The music video for the track was also premiered on American Idol, which also served as a venue for Lopez’s first live performance of the song.
Comparisons to Lopez’s 1999 debut single If You Had My Love and follow-up single Waiting for Tonight were made by editors from BBC Music and the Los Angeles Times. It was Lopez’s first song to be played in the US in four years. It has sold 3.8 million copies and been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). On the year-end Billboard Hot 100 list, it was ranked by Billboard as the eleventh-biggest hit of 2011. Austria, Finland, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and other nations awarded On the Floor first place on the chart.
