The song Mantra is performed by Jennie, a rapper and vocalist from South Korea. As the lead track from her upcoming debut studio album, it was made available on October 11, 2024, through Odd Atelier and Columbia Records. It’s Jennie’s debut single as a solo artist since leaving YG Entertainment and Interscope Records in 2023, and it’s also her first release under her own label.
El Guincho, Jelli Dorman, Jumpa, and Serban Cazan produced the song, which was written and recorded by a number of people, including Jennie, Claudia Valentina, and Isabelle Carlsson. It has been characterised as an R&B and dance-pop song with lyrics that glorify lady power and a disco bassline.
On September 25, she started teasing new songs by sharing a video of herself hanging a board ad that said, “Calling all pretty girls.” The following day, she gave followers access to a puzzle of pictures via her official website. When they were all put together, they showed a picture of Jennie standing in an open parking lot with the number 1011 written on the side.
In the days that followed, she kept sharing video teasers. One of the teasers showed her in the same parking lot and was titled “☎️ PRE-TTY-GIRL,” while another showed her tearing off a copy of a phone number from the bulletin board. The video “Presenting… 🍵” was published on September 28. In it, Jennie acted out the six principles of the “pretty girl mantra” as mentioned by the narrator. These guidelines include: being driven, practicing self-love, loving animals, getting enough sleep, taking care of oneself, and avoiding drama.
The following day, she posted pictures of herself with the word “mantra” in cursive tattooed on her waist and leg. On the 30th, she released a flirtatious teaser video featuring a clip of Jennie singing about girls having fun, formally announcing the single’s name as “Mantra” and its October 11 release date.
In reference to a scene from the 1998 movie Rush Hour, the music video, which was directed by Tanu Muino, opens with a young girl singing along to Mantra in the backseat of her parents’ automobile. Later, footage of Jennie singing the song in various outfits around Los Angeles is seen.
Commercially, Mantra performed strongly upon release, quickly climbing global streaming charts and making a notable impact across Asia, North America, and Europe. The song debuted high on major digital platforms, reflecting both Jennie’s massive international fanbase and the curiosity surrounding her first major release under Odd Atelier. Its accompanying visuals, sleek and fashion-forward, further reinforced her status as a global style icon, blending music, identity, and visual storytelling into a cohesive statement.
