Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and D’Mile wrote and produced it; Tasleema Yasin and LaShawn Daniels contributed additional material. Electropop and dance are combined with elements of hip hop and Eurodance in “Feedback”.
Jackson’s sexual bluster serves as the inspiration for the song’s lyrical structure, which asks a question and answers with a chorus of “sexy, sexy”. Its chorus uses metaphors to illustrate sexual climax by comparing her body to instruments like an amplifier and guitar.
When Feedback was released by Island Records on December 12, 2007, it became the lead single from the album Discipline. Music critics complimented the dance style of the song and how it differed from Michael Jackson’s previous album 20 Y.O. It became her highest-peaking single since “Someone to Call My Lover” and peaked at number 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as at the top of the Dance Club Songs chart. It made it to the top ten internationally in Slovakia, Greece, and Canada.
The music video for the song, which was directed by Saam Farahmand, has Jackson leaping from different worlds and then dancing in an unnamed white liquid. Critics gave the video excellent reviews, praising its choreography and interstellar imagery. On Good Morning America, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and TRL, Jackson gave a performance of Feedback; the latter was Jackson’s first MTV appearance since her 2004 Super Bowl performance controversy. “Feedback” was nominated for three International Dance Music Awards, among other honours.
