American singer Fantasia Barrino recorded the song When I See U for her second studio album, Fantasia. Louis Biancaniello, Waynne Nugent, Erika Nuri, Kevin Risto, Janet Sewell, and Sam Watters wrote the song, while Midi Mafia and Mzmeriq produced it. This R&B ballad was the album’s second single, released in April 2007 to largely good reviews from critics. Following its digital release, other remixes were created, with rappers Remy Ma, Young Jeezy, Lumidee, B.G., and Polow da Don appearing in three of them.
It was one of only fourteen singles in history to hit number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart upon release, and it remained there for a full year. At the conclusion of the decade, it was placed seventh on the chart. When I See U received two Grammy Award nominations in December 2007 for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Alicia Keys’ “No One” won both categories during the 50th Grammy Awards.
Lenny Bass, the director, shot the music video for When I See U on March 26, 2007. On April 25, 2007, it debuted on BET’s Access Granted, and on April 26, it was released on Yahoo! Music. On May 9, the music video made its premiere on BET’s top ten video countdown programme, 106 & Park.
