For their second studio album, Perfect Day, the German Eurodance duo Cascada released a cover of What Hurts the Most in 2007. Band members Yanou and DJ Manian developed and recorded the cover at Cologne, Germany’s Plazmatek Studio Cologne. The song from Perfect Day is available as a single. On November 21, 2007, both digital and physical versions were initially made available in Sweden by Zooland Records. Later, on December 3, 2007, the song was made available digitally in the UK through All Around the World. A week later, it was made available on CD.
Numerous DJ jockeys, including Flip & Fill, Spencer & Hill, and Darren Styles, contributed remixes to the releases. On December 11, 2007, “What Hurts the Most” was solicited to mainstream radio stations in the United States after it had been released digitally and physically two weeks earlier. On January 4, 2008, Zeitgeist published the cover in Germany as a CD and digital single.
Cascada’s rendition of What Hurts the Most departs from the traditional country sound, using Europop electronic beats and elements that are characteristic of DJ Manian and Yanou’s creations instead. But the song begins with an acoustic guitar strumming and electropop synths reverberating over Horler’s vocals.
