Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris‘s single Blame is taken from his fourth studio album, Motion. On September 5, 2014, it was made available as the third single from the album. The song is featured on the deluxe version of English singer John Newman’s second studio album, Revolve, and features Newman’s vocals. Harris produced the song, while Newman’s brother James Newman helped the artists write it.
Music critics gave the song favourable reviews, praising both Newman’s voice and the production. Harris and Newman each scored their third UK number-one hit and seventh overall when the song debuted at the top of the UK Singles Chart.
John Newman first reached out to Calvin Harris on Twitter regarding a song he had written. Harris constructed the song based on a demo that Newman submitted, which contained just his vocals and a few chords. Every word was written by Newman.
On June 8, 2014, the song’s artwork and announcement were made on Twitter. On the other hand, a substitute artwork cover was posted to the iTunes Store. The original release date of Blame was set for August 25, however it was pushed back to September 7.
Harris posted fifteen-second teases of the song to his Instagram account in August and September of 2014. Regarding the song, John Newman said, “It will live up to the hype that’s been built.” It excites me much since I believe it will advance my career.” The song has a 128 beats per minute tempo and is composed in the key of C minor. The vocal range of Newman is B♭3 to B♭5.
With 70,312 copies sold in its first week, Blame debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Harris’s seventh and Newman’s third number one in the country. The song reached its highest position of number 19 on November 15, 2014, after peaking at number 31 on September 27, 2014, in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, the single peaked at number one on the charts. It also placed among the top five in Austria, Germany, Ireland, and Italy, and among the top ten in Australia, Denmark, France, New Zealand, and Spain.
