Akon, an American musician, released the reggae fusion–R&B song Don’t Matter off his second studio album, Konvicted (2006). In January 2007, the track was made available as the third single from the album. It became Akon’s second number-one hit in the United States in April of that year. On Rolling Stone’s selection of the 100 Greatest Songs of 2007, “Don’t Matter” came in at number thirty-one. In MTV Asia’s list of the Top 100 Hits of 2007, this song came in at number 81.

The song “Don’t Matter” was produced by Anthony “Tony Love” Lawson and written by Akon. The song featured guitar and extra keyboards played by Tony Love and Giorgio Tuinfort, two of Akon’s regular collaborators.

Midway through January 2007, “Don’t Matter” became available in the US. As a result of heavy exposure, which saw the song top the Hot 100 exposure chart for two weeks, the song rose from its debut position of seventy-nine on the Billboard Hot 100 to number one after ten weeks on the chart. Only available through downloads, it peaked at number three after a physical release in the UK’s singles chart, where it debuted at number forty-five. When the song first appeared in Canada’s top 10 singles chart, it spent three weeks at the top of the chart. 3 times platinum certification for 3,000,000 digital sales was achieved by the song as of January 2008.
