Willow posted a 16-second teaser of the song on her Facebook page on January 22, 2011. Willow can be seen on the music video set in the song’s video clip. The energetic dance track 21st Century Girl was created by the Swedish production duo Twin.
On February 28, Willow sang the entire song live on The Oprah Winfrey Show. On March 1, 2011, the next day, it was made available on iTunes.
The music video for 21st Century Girl, which debuted on March 7, 2011, features Cicely Tyson in the role of a wandering tribal woman who is rescuing Willow from the desert sand. Then, in the video, Willow and her friends start to drag a whole city out of the desert. Rich Lee directed and the video was filmed in Los Angeles.
