American singer-songwriter Madonna and Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd collaborated on the song Popular, which features American rapper Playboi Carti. Released on June 2, 2023, by XO and Republic Records, it was first made available as the second single off the now-canceled soundtrack album for The Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol. A later deluxe edition of The Weeknd’s greatest hits album, The Highlights, released in 2024 featured the song as well. Produced by Metro Boomin, Mike Dean, Tommy Rush, and co-creators of The Idol Sam Levinson, Michael Walker, and John Flippin, the song is an R&B tune written by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti.
From a business standpoint, Popular peaked in the top 10 in Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the UK, as well as in the top 20 in Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, India, and Lithuania. The Weeknd is a native of these nations. In addition to other music markets, Popular received gold certifications in New Zealand, the UK, France, and Italy. Reviews of the song by music critics were good. When it was first released, Rolling Stone named it one of the year’s finest songs.
