The Australian rapper and musician Kid Laroi‘s song Girls was made available as a single by Columbia Records on June 28, 2024. As a B-side, it was released with the widely popular song Nights Like This from Kid Laroi’s 2023 album The First Time. Along with Xplicit, Tenroc, Pete Nappi, Rogét Chahayed, and Jon Bellion, The Kid Laroi composed and produced the song. The song’s music video was released with it.
Kid Laroi was described as “chillness personified on his new release, recalling the R&B-meets-pop style of Justin Timberlake and Pharrell in the early 2000s” by Rolling Stone’s Conor Lochrie.
At its core, GIRLS is a lighthearted tribute to female independence and the “girls’ night out” culture. The song famously interpolates Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 classic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” but flips the script into a modern R&B and hip-hop context. The lyrics describe a scene where women are taking control of their own happiness, dancing, and enjoying life after working hard.
LAROI takes on the role of a supportive partner or admirer, contrasting himself with an “ex-man” who didn’t treat them right. He positions himself as someone who understands and respects their need for freedom, rapping that it is their world and he isn’t there to hold them back. Many fans and critics have speculated that the song is dedicated to LAROI’s girlfriend, pop singer Tate McRae. This theory was bolstered by the star-studded music video, which features viral cameos from influencers like Alix Earle and Livvy Dunne.
Bradley Calder directed the music video, which debuted on June 28, 2024, concurrently with the song. Among those making appearances are social media influencers Livvy Dunne, Lily Chee, Valkyrae, and Alix Earle.
GIRLS proved to be a global success, particularly in LAROI’s home country and on digital streaming platforms. In Australia, the song was a major radio hit, peaking at #18 on the ARIA Singles Chart and receiving a nomination for Best Pop Release at the 2024 ARIA Music Awards.
On a global scale, the song debuted at #51 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and saw significant longevity on Spotify’s Viral and Top 50 charts throughout the 2024 summer season. It also performed well in Canada, reaching #40, and hit #47 on the UK Singles Chart. Notably, in the UK, it reached as high as #7 on the Official Hip Hop and R&B Singles Chart.
